While constantly dreaming of freedom this young boy taught himself to read, worked long hours and eventually bought his freedom. Somehow in 1834 he became the only African-American admitted to Cincinnati's Lane Seminary. His eloquent speeches declared the "great desire of all slaves was to obtain liberty and education". In 1988 his memory was honored for all time when Ohio Artist George Danhires created this bronze statue.
