I took this last week in the area of Council Grove Kansas. What you are seeing is sheet metal that an artist has cut to look like a family on the way west. There are a number of such sights around Kansas, and appear extremely life like from even as little as a half a mile or less to them. This was in fact on the Santa Fe trail. I just couldn't pass this up. The beauty of the day, and the story told here just fascinated me. It was so easy to imagine a family, alone to the world, making this very, very long journey. I felt that having the figures and the top of the hill at the bottom of a vertical shot gave an even stronger feel of the lonlinewss, and possible danger, this little family would have been going through.
