Artist's Description

Operation Tumbler-Snapper atom bomb test. US marines preparing to advance towards their objective following an atomic explosion at the Nevada Test Site, USA, on 1st May 1952. A total of 2100 marines took part, the largest number of troops to participate in an atom bomb test at that time. The yield of the explosion was equivalent to 19,000 tons of TNT, and the mushroom cloud has risen many kilometres into the atmosphere. The actual atomic explosion itself, named Dog, was the 4th test in the Operation Tumbler-Snapper series.
