This artwork features an essential component of the marriage ceremony of the Warli tribals of Maharashtra state ( in India) -the chowk - a diagram featuring the square. The painting is sacred and without it the marriage cannot take place.It is drawn on the mud-plastered wall of the house where the wedding is to take place.'Savasinis' or women whose husbands are alive draw it using rice paste on red ochre background. The four borders represent the four 'kula devatas' or clan dieties of the Warlis. Within the chowk 'Palghat devi' or goddess of fertility, is depicted. The sun and the moon are also drawn as they are said to bless the newly weds.
