Artist's Description
Mary and the Baby Jesus gaze at the tower of Strasbourg Cathedral. Built between the 11th and 15th century of red sandstone from the nearby Vosges Mountains, it is the only Gothic cathedral to have only one tower. (Two were planned, but the second was never completed due to lack of money -- even though the whole city chipped in and the organizer of the project actually sold his horse to raise funds!)
For almost 250 years -- from 1625 to 1874 -- this was the world's tallest building, and it remains the world's fourth tallest church even today. During the French Revolution, it was ordered destroyed because of the anti-religious sentiment of the time. But it was saved thanks to a clever blacksmith, who devised a scheme to build a gigantic Phrygian hat (a revolutionary symbol) out of metal and place it over the tower to hide the cross on top.
