Thanks, Cyril! The conditions at Ricketts Glen on this morning were really unique and I was hoping to capture them in this photo!

Wonderful waterfall!

Awesome image Mark! The color and composition is superb! Voted favorite!

Wow!! v/f and voted in the fall colors contest!

Thanks so much, Michael! I appreciate the feature! This is my favorite image thus far in the autumn 2013 season--it was abnormally warm in PA and the water levels were low, creating the unique conditions possible to get this great, radiant green moss!

Great depth. Congratulations on your feature in the "American Landscape Photography Group"

Beautiful long exposure! V/F

Mark VanDyke replied:

Thanks, Brian! Abnormally warm autumn temperatures and low water conditions must have been perfect for the growth of this green moss--was an unexpected but welcome find!

Artist's Description

Ricketts Glen State Park is located in Central Pennsylvania. Comprised of some 13,000 acres, the park lies within Luzerne, Sullivan and Columbia counties. The park derives its name from Civil War Colonel Ricketts who owned some 80,000 acres in this area before pieces were sold to the state of Pennsylvania for creation of this park. Ricketts Glen was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1969 and a State Park Natural Area in 1993. Two branches of Kitchen Creek split into a "Y" shape, spilling down the Allegheny Front along Ganoga Glen, Glen Leigh, and Ricketts Glen. The full waterfall loop is 7.2 miles and includes twenty-four named waterfalls. The heavy use of the word "glen" piqued my personal interest: a glen is apparently a Scottish term that describes a long, deep valley that typically features a watercourse.

About Mark VanDyke

Mark VanDyke

Mark VanDyke is an outdoor freelance photographer focusing on the Appalachian Mountains and Atlantic Coastlines. His work attempts to respect the natural world through honest representation of place, often during moments of exceptional atmospheric conditions. ----- Iíve never been much for suspended reality: cartoons, CGI, comic books, superheroes. Theyíve never done anything for me. Iíve found no solace in imagining alternate realities. When I was young I lived behind a school playground. What I needed was a decent set of sneakers and a ball. Later, I found my freedom in a bicycle. Nowadays, Iíve upgraded to an automobile and a camera. Who knows where tomorrow will take me. The gear and the tools may change but the point...
