Artist's Description
This is the car deck of the ferry, Quinault. This word is "Chinook", a 19th century trade language used by Native-Americans. The name is geographic and places the tribe that bears it next to the Pacific Ocean (big water) and present day Lake Quinault (little water). Thus, the title. I've been riding ferries all my life and even the car decks interest me. I've always thought of them as a poor man's ocean liner. I have tons of fond memories. I even remember meeting Betty MacDonald on one. She wrote "The Egg and I" and invented "Ma and Pa Kettle." As we were ascending the steep stairs to the cabin above this deck, I remember my father and mother stopping and talking with (as I remember) this very sophisticated lady. At one point my father introduced me as his son. I must have been 9 or 10 at the time, so this would have been back in the late 1940s or early 50s. I simply had no idea who she was. My father is mentioned in her books and built her barn, which is now on the National Historic R...
About Perry Woodfin
Perry studied and received a Bachelor's Degree in Fine Art from Washington State University, and has made a living with his art since 1965. His work is included in numerous collections and he holds many awards. Puget Sound raised, he lives on Whidbey Island fifty miles north of Seattle, Washington. Painting what surrounds him, he says, "I feel each piece of my art is like a word (or sentence), and when all is said and done I would hope people would say I had something interesting to say."
