Jani Freimann replied:

Thank you, Rosemary. :-)

Thank you, Jeanette. I completed the drawing and transferred it to canvas during the summertime. The angry man in the drawn version came out scary looking and I remember a kind of creepy sense of amazement that his image came from my pencil. I proceeded to transfer the drawing to canvas that same evening; which was about 11:00pm. Suddenly the power went out. The weirdest thing about that was that the power never goes out in the summertime and nobody else in the neighborhood had lost their power that evening. Just our house. The painting was due in just a few days to be used at our church for their series on the beattitudes. I wasn't able to do any more work on the painting that night as it was way too dark and I was powerless literally and figuratively speaking. I'll never forget the eerie feeling that gave me. It brought the prayer warrior out of me. I did get the painting done in time, but it was very tight to the deadline.

I agree with Annemeet, the "bleeding" paint really strengthens this image. Wonderfully done. I love how you also posted your initial drawing. It is fun to see the creative workflow.

The 'bleeding' of the paint adds a lot to the message of your painting! F/V

Jani Freimann replied:

Thank you, Annemeet. Painting this was an emotional and powerful experience that I relive every time I see it. The man in front isn't the only one who is effectively 'bleeding'. Persecution affects everyone and so does forgiveness.

Such emotions that come through...v

Congratulations! This piece is featured in Activism in Art v/

Thank you, Amnon. You honor me with your comment. This painting has touched more people that I could have ever imagined. People from all over the world. And to think that it all started with a simple request to illustrate the Beattitude: Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me (Jesus)...(from Matthew 5:10-11)

All I can say is WOW!

Thank your for the feature in Beige Brown Sepia group. :-)

Artist's Description

Personifying persecution in the form of gossip, mocking, anger and skepticism. The idea for this painting came to me immediately. However, it was several months before the idea was put on paper. I wanted to personify the type of persecution that we see here in the United States. The original intent for this painting was to depict religious discrimination. Mainly towards Christians; which is getting worse in American society. Matthew 5:10 & 11 ~ Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me (Jesus). Any type of persecution or discrimination on any level is wrong and hurtful. Judge not lest you be judged. Brothers, do not complain about one another, so that you will not be judged - James 5:9 I've had people tell me that they thought the man in front was Jesus. One of the cool things about this painting is that this...

About Jani Freimann

Jani Freimann

Jani is an award winning water media and graphite artist who specializes in horses and people, but can paint or draw anything. "I paint with a lot of water. Because of the texture that creates, I decided to make it work for me. Make it part of my style. Embracing the drips and blooms; doing them on purpose with bright colors has been very freeing. It fits my spirited, adventurous personality. Many times I'll use my drawing skills by adding pastels and/or India Ink. Sometimes watercolor alone just doesn't capture the depth needed to tell the story. When pastel or ink is added, it seems to complete certain pieces of art." "I will probably forever be adventurous in my art. Lately, I've been exploring a new media - water mixable...
