Pink and red clouds reflect off the pristine glassy ice at sunrise on Meddybemps Lake during early winter in Downeast Maine. Granite boulders rise above the frozen surface in the foreground with white cracks radiating through the ice. The ice was just thick enough to walk on and was still clear as glass. This time of day, the ice mostly looked like black obsidian except where it reflected the bright areas of the clouds and sky. It was so slippery, I had to wear cleats and scratch indentations into the ice so my tripod wouldn't slide away every time I touched my camera. This was the first time I had ever walked on a frozen lake with such pristine clear ice and I could see straight down to the bottom. The frozen lake kept making these...

I grew up in southern California during the 60s and 70s surfing the waves whenever I could get to the beach. In junior high I took a photography class and I've been hooked ever since. I got a BA degree in photography at Brooks Institute in 1978, but by the time I graduated I realized that I was a lot more interested in the art of photography than the business of photography. So, to pay the bills, I went to work in residential construction with my brother and dad for about 4 years until I decided to pursue my other passion, aviation. I joined the U.S. Air Force and spent 20 years as a combat search and rescue (CSAR) navigator which also gave me the opportunity to travel and see many parts of the U.S. and Europe.
