This is the oldest lighthouse in the US, having been established in 1791, and according to one website 'hundreds of thousands of people' visit this lighthouse each year. So the challenge is to be there when the tour buses aren't! Also, the same website says that "Edward Rowe Snow, the popular historian and raconteur of the New England coast, wrote in his book Famous New England Lighthouses, "Portland Head and its light seem to symbolize the state of Maine's rocky coast, breaking waves, sparkling water and clear, pure salt air." It isn't the only lighthouse I saw that met this description but it certainly was one of the more scenic ones. This lighthouse is in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, USA, and sits on a head of land at the entrance of the primary shipping channel into Portland Harbor. The light station is nowadays automated, and the tower, beacon, and foghorn are maintained by the United States Coast Guard, while the former lighthouse keepers' house is a maritime museum within Fort William...
