About the Image

Radiation Monitoring Near Chernobyl by Ria Novosti

Radiation monitoring near Chernobyl. An employee of the Polesye State Radiation-Ecological Preserve is using a Geiger counter to measure radiation levels in the soil and plants. He is wearing a mask and protective suit to reduce his exposure to the radiation. This is the village of Gubarevichi, in the Gomel Province of Belarus. Gomel Province is near the border with Ukraine, and was heavily affected by fallout from the Chernobyl nuclear power station following the nuclear disaster there on 26 April 1986. This area is 3 kilometres from the restricted zone. This photograph was taken on 21 April 2006, 20 years after the disaster. The village was evacuated after the disaster, but now eight families have returned to the village.

About the Artist - Ria Novosti

Ria Novosti

Science Photo Library was founded in 1981 by Michael Marten, one of the authors of "Worlds Within Worlds", a book exploring different ways to observe the universe - from electron micrographs, to images of earthrise taken from the Apollo spacecraft. When Marten started receiving requests for the beautiful images in the book, he had an idea of setting up Science Photo Library. Since then, Science Photo Library has continued to work alongside world acclaimed photographers and the leading science and medical experts to provide a central source of the best science and specialist imagery available. Although the collection started with scientific images, it has grown to encompass all aspects of science and their impact on everyday life.
