About the Image

Researcher With His Happy Emotional Lego Robot by Volker Steger

Emotional robot (image 1 of 2). Male researcher standing with the emotional Lego robot which he designed and built. The robot is equipped with a Mindstorm (not seen), a programmable Lego brick. The Mindstorm is programmed to make the robot react to its environment, either showing a happy (as here) or sad face. The stimuli which the robot reacts to could be light, touch or temperature. Sensors will detect these stimuli and the Mindst- orm will then calculate the appropriate facial response. The user is challenged to find out what makes the robot smile. Photographed at LegoLab, Aarhus University, Denmark. See photo T260/088 for an image of the robot with a sad face.

About the Artist - Volker Steger

Volker Steger

Science Photo Library was founded in 1981 by Michael Marten, one of the authors of "Worlds Within Worlds", a book exploring different ways to observe the universe - from electron micrographs, to images of earthrise taken from the Apollo spacecraft. When Marten started receiving requests for the beautiful images in the book, he had an idea of setting up Science Photo Library. Since then, Science Photo Library has continued to work alongside world acclaimed photographers and the leading science and medical experts to provide a central source of the best science and specialist imagery available. Although the collection started with scientific images, it has grown to encompass all aspects of science and their impact on everyday life.
