Large rhinoceros walking on a wooden dock

This is a rare photo. You don't see very often large and heavy rhinoceros testing the strength of a wooden dock, built for much daintier creatures. Well, you should have seen the splash when he jumped head first into the blue water.

Members of the rhinoceros family are characterized by their large size (they can reach one tonne or more in weight), a thick protective skin, formed from layers of collagen positioned in a lattice structure; relatively small brains for mammals this size (400-600 g); and a large horn. They generally eat leafy material, although their ability to ferment food in their hindgut allows them to subsist on more fibrous plant matter, if necessary. Unlike other perissodactyls, the two African species of rhinoceros lack teeth at the front of their mouths, relying instead on their powerful premolar and molar teeth to grind up plant food.

Regrettably, rhinoceros are killed by poachers for their horns...

I got my first Czech-made 35mm Etareta film camera in early 60's from my father (who used it for at least another fifteen years before me) and have been photographing and developing prints ever since. The other passions are travelling and love of nature that go well with photography. Over the last ten years, I published a series of four panorama books covering Toronto and the "near North" region in Ontario, and my prints have been sold by number of local galleries.
