Thanks Jan. It was an exhilarating day!

What a capture!!! Beautiful ship and I enjoyed reading your experience!!! v/f

Splendid picture, Robert, good old mariner!

Robert Lacy replied:

Thanks Wedigo, well you got the 'old' part right and and I was a mariner that day at least.

Excelent idea for a shot, Robert! Now...I'm asking...did you climb up that bowsprit..or walk in the rope nets or just how? I've only been fortunate to be aboard two sailing vessels in my life, and the only one I might have tried to go to the end of was one that had a little 'ladder type' effect with hand rails!! LoL! One day...on my bucket list...I want to take an actual two or three day trip on one of those tall masted sailing clippers. I don't even know if I could find such an offer, but it's on my list, just the same..;0) Anyway....this photo is a favorite of mine. Lucky you, and GREAT shot!!! voted, too.

Robert Lacy replied:

Thanks Julie. Walking out along the bowsprit is pretty easy when you have a rope net beneath you and the crew also insist on you wearing a safety harness vest, which is attached to one of the cables that run down both sides of the bowsprit. You actually see the rope from the harness out to the right of the bowsprit. Ditto climbing the the mast. You must wear a safety harness which goes through a pulley at the top of the mast and the tension is taken up by a crew member on deck. The only way you could fall is if the crew member decided to have a heart attack at the same moment as you fell, so there is no great bravery involved, just loads of fun. It was my first trip out on a large sailing vessel but it won't be my last.

Robert Lacy replied:

Oh yeah! I can see that I actually forgot to answer your question Julie. I walked on the rope net and not the actual bowsprit.

Taken from the bowsprit of 'Fylla', a tri-masted schooner, during the annual Around Fyn tall ships race/festival in July 2012. The bowsprit gives a spectacular view of the ship and an exhilarating ride at the same time.

About Robert Lacy

Robert Lacy

I am an Australian freelance photographer and artist who has lived in Denmark since 1997. Photography has been a passion since I was about eight years old when I was given my mother's Kodak Box Brownie. It has become my living since 2005 after winning the Panasonic Batteries Amateur Photographer of the Year Award ( for Denmark) . Painting, like photography, has been a hobby since I was a young child. I see photography and painting as two sides of the same coin. For all that, painting can still take you places the camera cannot and vice versa. Over the years I have sold art works and photographic prints in Australia, Denmark, England, Italy & USA. In 1993 I illustrated a children's book in Australia titled, 'I have been to...
