Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming offers up close and personal views of its wildlife in action in the fall months when the rut, or mating season, is in full swing. Two young elk cows circle each other for a bit and then turn and start to rise up on their hind legs. This action can be considered both playful in younger calves and challenging for older cows. Their ears lay back and one can hear the clicking of the hooves as they paw and punch at each other. With increasing numbers of elk cows in this area, there is a large amount of competition for mating.
