Roman guard dog mosaic. Mosaics consist of small pieces of coloured glass or stone, used to form an image or pattern on a floor or wall. This is a cave canem ('beware of the dog') mosaic, from a house in Pompeii, Italy. Several similar mosaics have been found in Pompeii, set in the floor at entrances.
