Sir Ronald Ross (1857-1932), British physician, experimenting with mosquitoes. Ross's research showed that malaria is not a water born-disease but is transmitted by a bite from an Anopheles mosquito, which Ross referred to as 'dapple-winged'. He also uncovered the life cycle of the plasmodium parasite that causes malaria. The parasite travels through the bloodstream of the female mosquito to the salivary gland, where it is injected into the victim when the mosquito bites. For this discovery Ross was awarded the 1902 Nobel prize for Physiology or Medicine.
