The setting sun emblazons the sky west of the LDS (Mormon) Temple in Salt Lake City, Utah. The silhouetted symmetry of the spires rising in stark relief against this fiery backdrop suggests intense worship and devotion. Because this photograph was taken in late summer, the sun sets latitudinally more to the north. This places it, in relation to the vantage point of this photo, directly over the Great Salt Lake west of the city and causes sunlight to refract upward from the lake's surface to an extent greater than over land. Depending on how much moisture is in the sky at "golden hour," this phenomenon can create some spectacular sky-works.

I captured this striking silhouette by standing in the middle of the road on 1st Avenue which runs directly eastward from the LDS Church Office Building and Temple Square. Fortunately, as evidenced by the late evening sky, rush hour had ended so there was not much traffic on 1st Avenue to impede me in getting this shot.
