About the Image

Salty Memories by Bruce Gourley

Cape Disappointment State Park on the Washington state side of the mouth of the Columbia River is part of the Cape Disappointment Historic District. Here Lewis and Clark's Corps of Discovery first glimpsed the Pacific Ocean on November 15, 1805. Later, the Cape Disappointment Lighthouse was built in 1856 overlooking the "the graveyard of the Pacific," a dangerous river bar. This is the oldest functioning lighthouse on the West Coast. This photo features part of the collection of the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center (which does feature post-Lewis and Clark lighthouse and seafaring items).

About the Artist - Bruce Gourley

Bruce Gourley

My photography focuses on light, patterns, colors and mood to tell stories of nature and of human creations. Yellowstone National Park, Glacier National Park and Jekyll Island State Park are my favorite places, but each year I seek out places new to me to explore and photograph. My photography is an ongoing journey stretching from coast to coast and from North to South, capturing landscapes, wildlife, history and ordinary items in striking ways.
