I took, developed and printed my first black and white photo with a cheap Kodak 110 format film camera at age 10, and was hooked. A family friend who saw the photos generously gave me a Braun viewfinder camera, 50 and 85mm lenses and a light meter. The light meter was a great way to learn about the nature of light, and that has become a key ingredient in my photography. I eventually learned to "eyeball" exposure without the meter. When my father bought a Russian Zenit 35mm SLR, I totally monopolized it, then saved and bought my own Pentax 35mm SLR before heading to University.
