This oil painting depicts the Irish Goddess Morrigan who represents Scorpio in my 'Empowered Feminine Zodiac' series. It is Autumn, so oak tress hold their last golden leaves and there is a low crescent moon hanging over a luminous sea. The Crescent moon echos the antlers of the lone stag that stands below looking on as Morrigan invokes a glowing Phoenix out of a magical cauldron that is a hot iron version of the Earth. Standing by her side is a large Irish Wolfhound and in the far distance upon a hill are the ruins of an Abbey or Monastery from which ravens fly. Mists flow through the scene in and around the elements of the painting.
Karen MacKenzie grew up on a beach on the western peninsula of Washington state in an old farmhouse with six siblings and bohemian parents. She was encouraged from an early age to be creative, and was drawn to painting and drawing in step with her mother's interest in art. Her father's love of literature and history fed her imagination as well, and she was given free-reign to explore any subject. Having developed an adventurous spirit, she traveled after high school and lived in Canada and Hawaii before moving to Seattle to attend Cornish College of the Arts.
