Hi Shirley, Wonderful effects make this a BIG WINNER. Always a joy to visit your gallery. FAV

Laura, thanks for visiting. My great grandfather, Leo Navratil, made the pews and the altar which was quite ornate. He was involved in building most of the churches in that area. When this church closed my relatives bought some of the pews.

Just checking out your art...Secluded Sanctum. We were wondering who made the pews for this church. One of our guests seems to remember an article in "Canada Country" that says your grandfather made them.

I felt very elated to have won 2nd Place in this contest, Thank you, Jeff, for hosting it and many thanks to those who voted for this image.

Artist's Description

ST. CHARLES CHURCH - TAWATINAW In 1917, a log church was replaced with this frame structured building and all the work was donated by the parishioners. Once or twice a month the priest travelled 21 kilometers by horse and buggy via the Athabasca Landing Trail to serve this parish. During the winter he came by horse and cutter which took many hours, keeping his feet warm with a coal briquette foot warmer heater. He had a small barn behind the church for his horse and feed suplies. He stayed overnight in the back of the church which was partitioned off and equipped with a stove and bed. His dog, Prince always travelled with him. In 1935 this church was moved from about one quarter mile to it's present location here in the hamlet of Tawatinaw. The Tawatinaw River located behind the church often flooded parts of the hamlet .The postmaster who had a boat would help the people cross over to attend the service. The photograph which I worked with was taken in Tawatinaw, Alberta, Canada....

About Shirley Sirois

Shirley Sirois

Born in the pristine wilderness of northern Alberta, Shirley became aware of the beauty and design in nature. It all began by making hundreds of decorative mud pies as a young girl. She was designing pictures and jewellery with seashells in her teenage years, and then moved on to ceramics as a young adult. Shirley always used her creative energy. One constant, though, was her love of photography which began at age 14 when Shirley bought her first camera. Being an art major in the field of education was a big help in improving her photography. After retirement she began selling prints at arts and craft shows. And now Shirley would like to share some of her favorites with you.
