About Pete TSouvas
In the Army as a young man, I was a general’s cook. I nearly went into the restaurant business when I was discharged. But after earning my bachelor’s degree at San Jose State University, I began teaching art at Soledad prison in 1958. Somebody knew that I grew up in San Francisco in a rough neighborhood, and it worked out pretty good. I completed a master’s degree in art at Stanford University in 1963 and was active in the Salinas, Carmel, Monterey and San Jose areas. I did numerous one-man shows and painted and exhibited with other artists as Group Five. In 1967, budget cuts in the state prison arts programs caused me to transfer to the San Joaquin Valley, where I taught art for the California Youth Authority at Karl...
