Talya, after trying to encompass the sheer magnitude of an Alaskan glacier (only the Hubbard thus far--it was as far north as our cruise ventured), I salute your skill at conveying this one's bulk & thickness, especially at its very edge: a veritable 'river of ice'! Thanks for adding my "Sketch Club" to Painterly Fine Art.

Talya Johnson replied:

Ah yes...glaciers are so difficult to paint! I'm delighted by your comment. Thank you so much. :)

Woohoo!! This amazing work has been featured in PL Inc-friends and fans group! We invite you to post this image in our features discussion. We rotate our featured images daily, posting in the featured discussion is a great opportunity to keep this beautiful work seen.

Love the texture and somewhat abstract quality.

You've captured an awesome sense of the majesty of this place, Talya. It takes masterful composition, color and brushstrokes to achieve that, especially plein air and working small. Wonderful work of art!

Talya Johnson replied:

What a flattering compliment!! Thank you, Bonnie!

You have packed so much power into such a tiny painting Talya. I feel as though I am standing on that mountainside looking at the glacier, it's cold and awe-inspiring...all on a 6x8 canvas!

Talya Johnson replied:

Thank you, Susan. I really enjoy the challenge of a small canvas. :)

How majestic is the rendering of this awesome scene. Thank you for bringing us the natural treasure as well as the magic of your wondrous vision. L/F

Talya Johnson replied:

Much appreciated, Greta!!

Artist's Description

This sparsely settled area along a steep and dramatic stretch of the Glenn Highway is a place like no other! The Matanuska Glacier gleams on the floor of the Talkeetna Mountain canyon it has carved. It is visible intermittently from the scenic byway that clings to the cliff above. It is the largest glacier in Alaska that you can drive to, with a face 4 miles wide. The fertile terrain on either side is graced with stunning birch, spruce, and aspen clinging to ancient rock. The glacier and the Matanuska River that flows from it are attractions to tourists and locals alike. Painting the massive hunk of ice is an exercise in chasing light. The glacier seems to create its own weather patterns as the snow capped peaks surrounding it appear then disappear again behind their cloudy blanket. I wanted to capture this shifting light as I quickly laid in my colors. My visitors from out of town were entertaining my children with a short hike while I scurried to capture the essence of the place....
