The last rays of the sun stream through the green bamboo, casting eerie shadows. A black cat sits on the gray stone path, regarding a raven (or crow) cawing at the sunset. The sunset is in shades of orange, deepening to vermilion. The raven perches on the Kanju-ji Lantern in the bamboo grove at Hakone Japanese Gardens (in Saratoga, California). This zen visionary landscape is part of the Dreamscapes series, which combines my original paintings with digital enhancements. The grunge texture and imperfections give the piece a weathered, timeless feel.
I have been painting most of my life. I am a native Californian and much of my inspiration comes from the beautiful natural landscape of the San Francisco Bay Area...the woods, the ocean, the rolling hills, the native wildflowers and wildlife. Even the surreal tree branches in the Zen series are often taken from the gnarled old oak trees I see on my walks. Other inspirations include teapots (I love tea) and animals, especially cats.
