Ocracoke Island is part of the Outer Banks of North Carolina. It is the most southern island that is inhabited and has played an important role in shipping and has seen more that its share of shipwrecks. It was once the home of Blackbeard and William Howard, well known pirates in the early 1700s. Blackbeard was killed not far from this site. This is a shot of the shoreline on the newly developed area of Ocracoke Island. It is the perfect place to get away from it all, yet still have a lot to do.
Bob MacKinnon is a retired college professor who fulfills his creative needs with writing and photography. He spends much of his time shaking his family tree to see what falls out. One interesting tidbit is that his 6th great grandfather was William Howard who was the quartermaster for Blackbeard the Pirate. William Howard later purchased Ocracoke Island in 1759 and his descendents have lived on the island ever since. Bob would like to live there, but, since there is only one Ocracoke and everyone who visits wants to live there, land values are exorbitant. He settles for infrequent visits.
