My husband and I went to our nephews wedding in China. The wedding was in the southern city of Loudi in the province of Hunan. There were many sidewalk vendors from which to buy a hot bowl of noodles or steamed buns. This particular street vendor had momentarily left the scene and so it was a perfect time for me to snap the photo. The vertical stove on which the kettle is resting on the far right hand side of the painting is fueled with solid coal. This stove, as well as the other elements in the scene, the pots, the three drums, and the broom was a delight to paint. I especially liked painting the rust on the stove.
Susanne (Sue) Darius
Whatever the subject matter, Susanne’s paintings usually work into a series because the soul of the image cannot be translated in just one painting, but must be thoroughly explored. Susanne Darius is an innovative emerging West Coast artist. Whether an image is portrayed in landscape or as an abstract depends on the creative process and the artist’s eye. The warm Spanish countryside has influenced Darius’ work by transforming and cementing her landscape style, but the mercurial artistic path sometimes leads to stunning rock faces with protruding sculpture or very modern representations of birch trees on a dark ground.
