Artist's Description
Silverfish. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of a silverfish (Lepisma saccharina). This primitive insect has remained unchanged for millions of years, and is considered a living fossil. The head is covered in sensory hairs. Its mouth parts are at centre right. An eye (red) is seen at left and two antennae protrude from its head at upper right and left. The silverfish is so named because it is covered in tiny shiny scales. It is a common household pest, feeding on starches in food, books and clothes. Magnification x40 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
