Sitting Bull by Lee Updike

Sitting Bull (Tatanka Yotanka) was born in 1831, in a Sioux tipi near the Grand River in Dakota territory. He was a revered Medicine Man and Chief of the Hunkpapa division of the Teton Sioux. He is best remembered for masterminding the defeat of General Custer's 7th Cavalry at the Little Bighorn, June 25th, 1856. Sitting Bull died on December 15, 1890, at age 59.

Welcome, thanks for visiting the site! You have probably noticed that the images here are all rendered in pencil. Let me explain; even as a young boy I was fascinated by pencil drawing. I admired my dad and others who possessed some talent at it. I practiced a lot because I wanted to be a pencil artist, too. Some years later, I studied art in earnest; won a couple of scholarships, took courses at the Ontario College of Art and the Artist's Workshop in Toronto. Eventually, I became a freelance illustrator. Of course I used various mediums, but pencil work was always the foundation of everything.
