About the Image

Smaug and the Thrush by Lynn-Marie Gildersleeve

This print is from a linoleum cut block. This inspiration for this idea is from J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit. On one side you'll find a dragon Smaug's eye and scales. On the other side of this piece is a thrush with the sun behind him. Dividing this artwork is an arrow. The arrow is from Bard, the man who shot down the great Smaug as he attacked the town of Esgaroth. The thrush awakens Smaug from his slumbers and as the dragon is destroying the town, the thrush alights on Bard's shoulder and tells the archer where to aim the fatal blow.
