Happy Year of the Snake!
2013 is the Year of the Snake. The Chinese calendar is a lunisolar calendar, and the start of the year is based on the cycles of the moon, and this year it falls on February 10, 2013.
Years of the Snake are: 1929, 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001 and 2013
This is my wild grass calligraphy for the Chinese character, snake.
Chinese writing dates back to over 5000 years ago. Snake 蛇 is a pictograph. The original oracle bone script is a rough drawing of the snake. It has evolved to the modern day character but you can still vaguely see the head on the left and the tail on the right.
The two sides of me...
My sumi paintings are essentially monochromatic. I find boundless freedom in expressing myself through different shades of black, white and grey. I love to use minimal strokes capturing the essence while leaving enough white space for the viewer's imagination. That stems from the Taoist thinking - sometimes not doing anything is action in itself.
With acrylic, watercolor and oil, I feel like a 4 year old child rolling on the floor coating myself with all the different colors I love. Unlike my Chinese ink paintings, I fill the canvas with so much color that it might be suffocating for you but I am having so much fun I just want to share it with you too.
