Artist's Description

This is a plein air painting I did today with a friend. We drove to where the owner had cut and baled large square bales of straw. I like the perspective view down the rows. The wood lots cut the view off except for the small blue area to the left of another wood lot a mile away. I sat just as the horizon cut at the bottom of the end of the row. I found myself using an old oil brush technique to add texture to the wood lots.

Much of his early career was spent learning about art through teaching art. His imagery grew out of early television and graphic media. Spear paints both as a landscape painter and an abstractionist which characterizes his ecclectic tendencies. Philip Guston has had an influence on his art of recent. Exploring the art media's physical qualities is an important element in his style coupled with an atavistic love of an expressionistic drawing style.
