This 208 foot, stainless steel cross was erected in 1965 as a commemoration of the 400th anniversary of the first mass on United States soil, and the founding of St. Augustine, America's Oldest City, during that mass in 1565. Interestingly, in 1964, Hurricane Dora wreaked havoc on St. Augustine. However, since the Great Cross was put up in 1965 St. Augustine has not been touched by hurricane force winds, although no claims are made.
