About the Image

Stetson Mansion by Edward Williams

The Stetson Mansion 1870 James Stetson was president of the California Street Cable Railroad Company beginning in 1884 when he and local banker Antoine Borel purchased the line from Leland Stanford. The home, built in 1870, survived both the Great Earthquake and watched the subsequent fire burn the homes across Van Ness Avenue. Stetson died in 1932. A non-descript brick building (currently a Citibank) occupies the lot on which this mansion stood.
