Storm of 1888
My depiction of the great snow storm of 1888 approaching.
The Great Blizzard of 1888 or Great Blizzard of '88 (March 11 - March 14, 1888) was one of the most severe recorded blizzards in the history of the United States. Snowfalls of 40-50 inches (102-127 cm) fell in parts of New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts and Connecticut, and sustained winds of over 45 miles per hour (72 km/h) produced snowdrifts in excess of 50 feet (15.2 m). Railroads were shut down and people were confined to their houses for up to a week.
Creating images that inspire insightful dialogue among viewers is my objective. A drawing, painting, print or any art should awaken reminiscence of one's past or inquisitiveness of places and things of interest or beauty. The majesty of an eagle soaring high above mountain tops or the delicate beauty of a flower nourished by nature can inspire a feeling of knowing life is unfolding as it should. I was raised in Northeastern Pennsylvania where my family has lived for generations. A child of hard working parents (as most of us were) I worked various jobs and professions while earning a college degree. My interest in art began very young when my father became fascinated by nature photography. Watching my father work in his darkroom and...

What a great old building picture, I imagine this building was there to survive the Great Blizzard! And my family, newly transported by boat from Cork, they survived it too. Wow. All my grandparents were alive then, children, but they never talked about it. Kids see storms differently, more of an adventure. Thanks for the history! VF
