I have the opportunity to see a few P-51Ds at airshows and witness their capabilities. Nothing in the world comes close to the sound of the aircraft in flight!

Artist's Description

Lt. Col. Thomas L. Hayes, Jr. flying his famous P-51D Mustang, nicknamed Frenesi. Hayes had earlier claimed two ground victories in the Pacific with the 35th Fighter Group. He had a close call on Feb 19, 1942 when he was shot down and wounded. He had much better luck after reassignment to the newly-formed 357th Fighter Group, destined to introduce the Mustang to the 8th Air Force in the European Theater. "Tommy" was credited with 8.5 aerial kills while flying P-51 Mustangs with "The Yoxford Boys" based at Leiston, and served most of his time with the 357th as commander of the 364th Fighter Squadron before moving up to group staff, where he continued flying combat missions. Hayes remained in the postwar Air Force, retiring as a Brigadier General in 1970.

After high school, he earned a B.A. in History from Louisiana State University in Shreveport while serving in the US Air Force Reserve at Barksdale Air Force Base. With marriage came a move to the beautiful Birmingham, Alabama area. Diving in head first, Wade quit his job at an aviation museum in 2003 and began to work full-time as an aviation artist. He started accepting commissions immediately, and to this day his work is primarily commission-driven. Along with his...
