What a beautiful image! The beginnings of twilight, the end of the golden hour, created beautifully in this painting, the lights in the church really add to the peaceful scene you have created here. This is an absolutely gorgeous work of art.

Lee Piper replied:

Thanks Mary

Lee, Hans Hoffmann (the Color theorist) would have applauded your echo of about-to-fade sunlight in the lit church windows below. and the whole scene--distant hills, mid-range forests, misty valley and snow-quilted meadow--are bathed in a stubbornly lingering daylight. A reassuring way to end the old year... and ring in the new!

Thanks Joseph

Artist's Description

Church is the place where all the action is on Sunday night in a small village in Maine. This painting is of the sun setting over a mountain with the light casting highlights on a snowy field. In the foreground is a small evergreen with fresh snow on its branches. On both sides of the oil painting are small saplings and a broken down snow fence. About a quarter of a mile away is a small village with a church with its lights on. Most of the houses in the town are without lights. Its easy to imagine that most of the towns people are already in the church. Beyond the town is a dark blue woods witch helps to highlight the church and houses. Beyond the first woods is an open field and then more wooded area at the base of a mountain. Off in the distance are some large mountains painted in pale purple. The wintry clouds have a bright silver light on their edges. The Appalachian trail begins near this town. This painting is protected by copyright.

About Lee Piper

Lee Piper

I have been an oil painter my entire life. Many of the paintings that I do are sentimental rural settings. I also like to paint landmarks and paintings that tell a story like "Surprise Visit". My paintings have won first place in a lot of competitions and many times have been sold that way. To me there is no more satisfying experience than to complete a painting and be happy with the outcome. The next best thing is to have someone buy it! I hope you enjoy looking at my paintings and I welcome your comments. I will personalize a print once you have kept it for the duration of the 30 days. You must pay the shipping to and from me.
