I discovered this image while tramping through a stand of jack pines behind my cottage, late one cold November afternoon. What caught my attention here was the inviting shaft of warm sunlight filtering through the opening in the trees, brightening the forest interior. Knife painting on stretched canvas.

Art has been an essential part of my being for as long as I can remember, and is deeply rooted in my lifelong connection with the natural world. A zoologist by training, I spent my professional life as a university professor, a career path that left little time for artistic pursuits. On those occasions when I did find the opportunity to paint or do photography, the experiences were both humbling and deeply gratifying, providing creative outlets that I have been privileged to continue into retirement. The son of a bush pilot, I had the good fortune growing up to see and travel Canada’s northern boreal landscapes.
