When I first started calling myself "an artist" back in 2005, I was watching a TV morning show and they said that it was the solstice that day, and it was one of the two times a year you could stand eggs up on end, and they gave a demonstration. I thought that might make an interesting picture, so I bought a couple of dozen eggs and set up my point and shoot camera and took this shot, then gave it a painterly look.. It has sold many times, as artwork, on cups, aprons, T-shirts and so on. I later learned that you may stand eggs up on end any day, and the solstice story was not factual. At any rate, I'm glad I responded to the story or I would never have taken the photo nor made so many customers happy.

Chuck Staley

Chuck Staley was born in Memphis, Tennessee, and spent his youth growing up in funeral homes in small towns scattered across the South. After high school he studied art at the Memphis Academy of Arts and engineering at Georgia Tech in Atlanta. Following a stint in the Army Signal Corps in Europe, Staley went to work in television broadcasting, first in Memphis and then in Hollywood, directing thousands of hours of music videos, commercials and TV programs of all sorts, including six years with CBS News at Television City, during which time he taught writing at Los Angeles City College. Following his own advice to his students, "Write about what you know," he wrote Southern Planter and Murder on the Six O'Clock News. Now he is...
