Description
Long before I ever visited New York City, I was fascinated with the Brooklyn Bridge and its history. The bridge is truly iconic, not just its association with New York City but as a symbol for the indomitable human spirit.
Here was a bridge that for a time spanned the longest distance of its day. Not only did people think it couldn't be done, the people who stood to lose when a bridge opened fought to keep the status quo. It came at a cost of human life and limb, and it's been surpassed many times over since. Yet, the bridge still retains its landmark status and is popular with tourists and locals.
This was my first sighting of the bridge, from a boat no less, but later the same day I would take one of many strolls across it. It's almost like an urban park with the pedestrian deck, a place to stroll and ride bikes over the East River.
And this particular day I was lucky to have great skies. I love the way the clouds appear to streak in the opposite direction to the bridge from this viewpoint, almost creating an X over Manhattan - I guess X marks the spot?
