This is a dramatic moment in casting. The arc furnace has heated the steel to almost 3000 degrees, and the batch has passed the metallurgic tests. The crane man lowers the ladle into a big pit in front of the furnace, and the whole furnace is tipped to pour the white hot metal into the ladle. The Melter is directing the crane man from his booth, as the ladle man and assistant wait for their duties when the ladle is raised. I like how the supervisor planted himself with arms crossed, watching the whole scene with pride.

I have a strong sense that “this is my time on earth. It had a beginning and it will have an ending. I share this time on earth with an abundance of other people.” Along with that is an intense sense of place. Most of my work is about these two concepts. The works say, “Here is this place, where I saw, breathed and absorbed the atmosphere. Here are some artifacts from other people who share my time on earth.” I work with fabrics. Their colors and textures have filled my life, since I learned to sew at age 13. In high school I made all of my clothing including my prom dress and Easter coat. Now I use those sewing skills and love of fabric to make Studio Art Quilts: stitched collages of fabric, found objects and papers. I use both hand...
