This is a dramatic moment in casting. The arc furnace has heated the steel to almost 3000 degrees, and the batch has passed the metallurgic tests. The crane man lowers the ladle into a big pit in front of the furnace, and the whole furnace is tipped to pour the white hot metal into the ladle. The Melter is directing the crane man from his booth, as the ladle man and assistant wait for their duties when the ladle is raised. I like how the supervisor planted himself with arms crossed, watching the whole scene with pride.

My art reflects my interest in Western Pennsylvania and its neighborhoods, land and industry, both past and present. The portfolio represented in my 2011 solo show When the Sky Rained Fire consists of contemporary art quilts inspired by the paintings by artists in the heyday of steelmaking in Western PA. As time pushes the smoke-filled sky into distant memory, some nostalgia has crept into our collective consciousness. The fiber pieces including antique lace representing smoke thus speak of current perceptions as well as bring to mind the past.
