I'm always amazed at how little the eye can see as we drive on a highway or even over a mountain pass at night. Most people never even realize how much beauty they're missing. After stopping and getting away from lights for a little while, the eyes can finally adjust and see the layers of light reaching up into the skies. High above the glow of visitors traveling through the Rocky Mountains at night, the real beauty appears.

This composite image was taken near the top of Loveland Pass, near the town of Dillon, Colorado. It was captured with a fisheye lens but the distortion was then corrected in Lightroom. One final note: the little bit of funny lighting above the ridge on the left was caused by the headlights of some vehicles on the other side of the ridge coming up the pass.
