About the Image

The Brakeman - Vintage by Robert Frederick

In truth, there is no brakeman - The job went away with the addition of air-brakes. The name still lingers but with a nebulous job description that may include throwing hand switches in the yard, assistant to the conductor, hand signals to the engineer, passenger duties etc. Pre-1920s he road in the caboose and applied the brakes when signaled. Individual brakes for each car may have been required so it was common for him to walk atop the cars climbing car ladders. He was generally the one who threw the "hobo" off the train. In this image he is signaling to the engineer to stop and go for disembarking the passengers and disconnecting the cars to prepare for a refuel and turnaround.

Photography From A Car Window Make sure you are here: robert-frederick.artistwebsites.com If you're not there, then get there, I'll wait.... You'll see things in a different light. I travel North Texas roads a lot and most everything here is photographed from my car window. Iím not all that lazy but my idea is to show you what you might be missing while driving and texting or putting your makeup on in the rearview at 60Mph. Perhaps you see what I see but don't carry a camera and wish you could have a few of those moments back. Perhaps you'll find those moments, even the more spectacular, here. Or, watch this!
