Portland Head Light was lit on January 10, 1791 by keeper Joseph Greenleaf. This light is probably the most visited and photographed light in New England. A number of ships lost their existence at or near this light over the years. Notably lost was the Bohemian bound from England in 1868 with over 200 passengers aboard. This vessel loaded with immigrants went into Alden�s rock a few miles south of the light. Advertised on the rocks to the right of the light in this image is a record of the loss of the Annie Maguire on Christmas Eve, 1886.
