Thank you for your comments, everyone. The commissioned series I did for McConway and Torley meant a lot to me. I insisted on depicting each worker as an individual, not a generic entity. The supervisors pointed out the very best grinder, and I worked with him to get this picture of him in action. He was trying not to hit me with the sparks. I really didn't care, as I used to work in factories myself and was familiar with the sting.

Great job! Love your work. You capture the essence of a very exciting industry with your artistry. :) v

Your fingers are like a camera's lens.Unbelievable realism !

You're the real deal, girl! ;) Like it a lot!

I swear I can hear the grinder and see the sparks flying! You did an amazing job capturing the energy and action.

Artist's Description

The original of this painting is hanging in the administration building at McConway & Torley in Pittsburgh, along with 10 others of key processes in the production of railroad couplers. The worker depicted, Dave, is a lead grinder with many years experience at the plant. I sketched him working, and took many reference photos, as he tried to keep me from being stung by the sparks. I completed the actual painting in my studio. I love the cool factory light, and the heat of the sparks flying off the grinding wheel. I am proud that those who know Dave can recognize him from this painting, even with all of his protective layers.

About Martha Ressler

Martha Ressler

I have a strong sense that “this is my time on earth. It had a beginning and it will have an ending. I share this time on earth with an abundance of other people.” Along with that is an intense sense of place. Most of my work is about these two concepts. The works say, “Here is this place, where I saw, breathed and absorbed the atmosphere. Here are some artifacts from other people who share my time on earth.” I work with fabrics. Their colors and textures have filled my life, since I learned to sew at age 13. In high school I made all of my clothing including my prom dress and Easter coat. Now I use those sewing skills and love of fabric to make Studio Art Quilts: stitched collages of fabric, found objects and papers. I use both hand...
