This was painted on a beach in Portsmouth looking across the Solent to the Isle of Wight. The hill in the background is St Boniface Down which is right on the Southern tip of the island. The day was very fresh and windy and the light had a special quality because of the interplay of the sea and fast moving white clouds. The shadows of the clouds really animated the water and I had to work quickly to capture the tones and colours.

I'm a landscape painter from the Isle of Wight, a small island off the south coast of England. The subject of all my paintings is simply the distance. The feeling of space when we stand in front of a landscape and look into the distance. The effect of the colours, tones and lines. I want to find the moment when we suddenly see something unfamiliar, something infinite. I paint in oils on small wooden panels. I like the way the smooth surface of the wood makes the paint drag and blend in unexpected ways. The colours also stand out more because the paint isn't absorbed so much as on canvas. I like to use just primary colours, 3 blues, 2 yellows, 2 reds and white. By blending everything only from the primaries it creates lots of subtle...
