Richard, I discovered your art with an article in Kingston This Week regarding selection of your talent for a commemorative $20 Canadian coin. Congratulations! What an honor, and what a beautiful image; it captures the nostalgic essence of many Canadian childhood memories, in my case growing up in (then even more) remote Northern Newfoundland, though now calling Glenburnie home, where I am blessed with still being able to live the memory in my backyard on Colonel By Lake. As a matter of fact, on this cold November morning CBL looks like it will be perfect for pond hockey again this season! Thanks for the memories; the coin looks great as well!

Richard De Wolfe replied:

Thank you so much Greg. It was a great honour to have the opportunity to create the 'Pond Hickey' coin. I am so glad that you found it both nostalgic and inspirational!

Beautiful work no doubt :) Congratulations!!

Richard De Wolfe replied:

I appreciate your comment Sethu!

Artist's Description

Winters are long for country kids in both Canada and the northeastern USA. For many generations these boys and girls spent much of their time out-of-doors, often skating on frozen farm ponds. A few friends would gather on a hastily shoveled rink for an afternoon of "shinny" and plenty of fresh air. Equipment was often scarce, sometimes even lacking skates. Goal posts were improvised with such readily available items as a pair of boots or even blocks of firewood.

About Richard De Wolfe

Richard De Wolfe

The Thousand Islands region of Ontario, Canada, was the perfect backdrop for a childhood filled with adventure for Richard De Wolfe, an artist who still identifies strongly with rural life. The forests, fields, and of course the mighty St. Lawrence River, made the wonders of nature come alive for him. The art of Richard De Wolfe has been very popular ever since his first one-man show at the age of eighteen. That show was a sell out, supplying him with commissions for many months after. He went on to spend twenty-five years as an illustrator, producing paintings for national and international corporations such as General Motors, Pepsi-Cola, and Sony. “I believe that working as an illustrator was the best training I could possibly...
