Lightning was striking over Piney Mountain at sunset in northern Albemarle County, Virginia. This painting is part of the series of sunset paintings known as The Very Rich Hours.
William Van Doren, a native of Virginia, began painting, self-taught, while still a student at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. Soon he was selling his work to individuals in Baltimore and New York. Later, while working as an editor, ghostwriter, and designer in New York and Los Angeles, he continued developing his art. In 1995, in Virginia, he began painting the sunset, and on January 1, 2006, began a series of paintings responding to the sunset from each day -- eleven years of consecutive sunset paintings. In 2011 he displayed all 365 sunsets of 2010 consecutively edge to edge in one exhibition at the Baker Gallery at Woodberry Forest.
