Thundering Spirit depicts a kneeling Native American in desperate exaltation during a ravaging thunderstorm on the American Great Plains. He is trying to understand why the bison have disappeared from their traditional hunting grounds. As the rain mercilessly pelts his skin, so does the realization that his way of life may be soaking into the drenched soil as did the blood of his beloved bison. The dramatic use of light and positioning in the composition reinforces the feeling of desolation and ultimate conflict. With the skull of an American Bison prominently positioned in the left foreground, the viewer is reminded that lives on the American Plains were as much about day to day survival as they were about spiritual deliverance.
I was inspired by the traditional artists and the great outdoors at a very young age. I grew up in the Bighorn Mountains of Wyoming where I studied the realistic canvases of James Bama and the inspirational compositions of Wyoming artist, John Giarrizzo. I was always fascinated by how nature could be so beautiful and yet so very deadly at the same time. Early in my life I learned that both physical and mental survival is a day-to-day struggle for all species of wildlife creating a truly Savage Serenity. I received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education in 1990 teaching high school art and working in the graphic arts field for many years, most recently opening 7 Pines Studio in Comfrey MN.
