The old trestle
in Murphy, North Carolina
stands as a relic
of days gone by.
The old L&N Railroad
passed through here
carrying freight and people
in years past.
Named for the line that spanned
from Louisville to Nashville,
the depot is just south of the trestle
less than a half mile.
The tracks are still being maintained
in hopes that the line
will some day reopen
and become a tourist train
through the Smoky Mountains.
This line follows the Valley River
which empties at this very spot
into the Hiwassee River.
Murphy is where the Trail of Tears
began when the Cherokee Indians
from the mountains of Appalachia
and traveled by foot out west.
